Cracks in Walls: Types, Causes and the Right Repair for Each

The first week of monsoon always reveals what the dry season hid. A hairline crack that was barely visible in April has opened up. A diagonal line has appeared near a window corner that wasn't there last October. Someone on site is pointing at a vertical crack running through a column and asking whether it's serious.

Not all wall cracks are the same. That sounds obvious, but it is the single most important thing to understand before reaching for any repair product. The type of crack tells you the cause. The cause tells you the correct repair. Getting this sequence wrong — filling a structural crack with surface paste, or using a rigid mortar where a flexible filler was needed — is how cracks come back within the same monsoon season.

What Causes Cracks in Walls: The Real Story

Concrete and masonry move. They expand in summer heat, contract overnight, and respond to the weight placed on them over decades. Most wall cracks are a visible record of that movement — some harmless, some not.

Thermal movement. Every RCC structure in India goes through roughly 40 to 50 degrees Celsius of temperature variation across a year. That movement creates stress at the interface between plaster and masonry, particularly at corners, sills, and junctions. Hairline cracks in plaster after summer are almost always this — cosmetic, not structural.

Concrete shrinkage during curing. Fresh plaster and concrete shrink as they cure. If the mix had too much water, if curing was inadequate, or if the plaster was applied too thick in a single coat, shrinkage cracks appear within weeks of application. These are typically fine, map-cracked patterns across large flat surfaces — not isolated lines.

Settlement and foundation movement. Diagonal cracks running at roughly 45 degrees from window and door corners are the ones that need attention. These indicate differential settlement — the structure moving unevenly because of soil movement, overloading, or inadequate foundation design. These are structural cracks. No amount of crack filler paste repairs the underlying cause.

Monsoon moisture cycling. This is what most people are seeing right now in July. Masonry and mortar absorb water during rain and swell slightly. They dry and contract when the rain stops. After years of this cycling, the bond between plaster and substrate weakens at its weakest points. Old buildings with soft lime mortar joints are particularly susceptible. The monsoon doesn't create these cracks — it reveals cracks that were already forming.

Reinforcement corrosion. When steel reinforcement inside concrete begins to corrode, it expands volumetrically, creating longitudinal cracks that run parallel to the rebar direction. If you see a crack with rust staining around it on a beam, column, or slab soffit, this is not a surface repair situation. The concrete cover has to be removed, the steel treated, and the section rebuilt with polymer-modified repair mortar.

Types of Cracks in Walls: A Practical Classification

Hairline cracks. Less than 0.2mm wide. Visible but not measurable with a finger. Almost always non-structural. Common in plaster surfaces, especially after the first monsoon in a new building. Crack filler paste applied with a putty blade is the correct product — a thin, polymer-modified compound that fills the surface void without rigidity.

Medium cracks. 0.2mm to 2mm wide. You can see daylight or feel the edge clearly. These may be shrinkage, thermal, or early settlement cracks. They need proper preparation — widen the crack slightly to create a groove, remove loose material, apply a crack filler paste or powder depending on depth, and finish with compatible plaster. Filling a medium crack without widening it first is the most common DIY mistake. The filler bonds to the edges but not the base, and the crack reappears at the same point within weeks.

Wide cracks. Greater than 2mm. These are the ones contractors photograph and send to structural engineers. Width alone doesn't confirm structural cause — a shrinkage crack in a thick plaster coat can be 3mm wide and completely non-structural. But any crack wider than 2mm requires an assessment of pattern, location, and progression before repair begins. Active cracks (ones that are still moving) need flexible sealant, not rigid repair mortar.

Structural cracks. Diagonal, stepped through brick courses, visible on both sides of a wall, or accompanied by displacement (one side of the crack is higher than the other). These are not product problems. Do not fill them and paint over them. The structure needs assessment first.

Crack Filler Paste vs Crack Filler Powder: Which One to Use

This is the question that comes up on every project, and the answer is straightforward once you understand what each product is designed to do.

Crack filler paste is a ready-to-use polymer-modified compound. It is designed for hairline to medium surface cracks in plaster and masonry — smooth, paintable, and flexible enough to accommodate minor thermal movement without re-cracking. Crack filler powder is a cement-based product for wider and deeper cracks where structural bonding to the substrate matters more than surface finish. Use powder for cracks wider than 1mm, for cracks in concrete (not just plaster), and anywhere the repair will be under any load.

The short answer: paste for surface and plaster cracks, powder for concrete and structural substrate cracks. Using paste on a concrete crack expecting it to bond structurally is a mistake. Using powder on a hairline plaster crack is over-engineering that will crack the surrounding plaster.

How to Prevent Cracks from Coming Back

Crack repair without addressing the underlying cause is a temporary fix. Here is what actually prevents recurrence.

Control joints in long walls. Any plastered wall longer than 3 to 4 metres should have a control joint — a planned break in the plaster surface that gives the material somewhere to move. Cracks in long walls without control joints are almost inevitable over time, regardless of product quality.

Adequate curing after plastering. Plaster that dries too fast in summer heat shrinks before it has developed enough strength to resist that shrinkage. Three days of moist curing minimum — not one. This is where most shrinkage cracking originates.

Correct plaster mix proportions. Rich cement mixes shrink more than leaner ones. A 1:3 cement-sand ratio for finish plaster is already on the rich side. Additions of SBR latex or polymer bonding agents improve flexibility without adding cement content.

Waterproofing before the next monsoon. A crack that is repaired but left exposed to the next monsoon will cycle open again as moisture enters and the masonry swells. After crack repair, apply a waterproofing coat over the affected area — particularly on external faces.

When the Crack Is Telling You Something Bigger

The monsoon is a diagnostic tool. It reveals what the structure has been building toward through the dry season. Most of what comes up in July is manageable — paste, powder, and a coat of waterproofing. But some of what comes up warrants a structural engineer, not a product recommendation.

If you see: cracks that are growing week on week, cracks accompanied by rust staining, diagonal cracks at column-beam junctions, or any crack where one side has displaced vertically relative to the other — stop filling and start assessing.
